Haleakala work programs open to teens

Advertiser Staff

Teens and young adults can gain experience in visitor services and resource conservation through a variety of summer programs at Haleakala National Park.

There are five positions in the Youth Conservation Corps summer employment program for people ages 15 to 18. The Haleakala program runs from June 16 to Aug. 8. Participants will work 40 hours per week and receive minimum wage. Youths will work outdoors and in remote backcountry settings on trail maintenance.

High-school students who apply for a Student Conservation Association conservation crew in the Pacific region may be considered for a Haleakala crew. The program runs for four weeks during the summer. Crew members will do backcountry trail work and learn about Hawaiian cultural and natural history.

For information contact Sharon Ringsven, the park's volunteer program coordinator, at (808) 572-4487. Or click on "Volunteer" at the park Web site.
