Punahou girls roll over Iolani to stay perfect in ILH soccer

With much business to take care of off the field, the Punahou School girls soccer team took care of business on it yesterday with a key 3-1 road victory over Iolani.
Jeff Widener The Honolulu Advertiser
The win kept the Buffanblu (4-0) atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings, while the Raiders fell to 3-2. Punahou still has a rough week ahead, with games against Kamehameha (4-1) on Tuesday and Pac-Five (2-2) on Thursday and Saturday.
Iolani's Malia Anderson, left, and Punahou's Lizzy Carlson battle for possession of the ball in an ILH game at Iolani.
"It really doesn't matter who has the lead now," Buffanblu coach Jorge Barbosa said. "After next week, we should have a clearer picture of who the front-runner is."
In the meantime, Punahou also has much more than just soccer to deal with. The team has 15 juniors and seniors on its roster, and SATs were taken yesterday morning. The junior class is in charge of running the school's annual carnival, which is set for Feb. 7-8, and the senior class puts on the coinciding variety show.
Last season, in the weeks surrounding the carnival and variety show, the Buffanblu went 2-1-2. They had started the season 5-0.
"It can be crazy," Barbosa said. "Just about every day at practice, I'm missing two girls at a time."
Iolani threatened to ruin Punahou's perfect start yesterday when junior Katie Sakai scored in the 43rd minute to give the Raiders a surprising 1-0 lead. The Buffanblu had controlled much of the first-half action, narrowly missing two goals with balls that went off the crossbar.
Sakai was able to punch in a shot from inside the penalty box after Punahou keeper Ali Lipsher's goal kick ricocheted off sweeper Kelsey Baker and rolled straight to Sakai.
"We made an error, but (Sakai) was alert and she was right there," Barbosa said. "It was a good kick."
The goal momentarily gave Iolani new energy on offense, but the Buffanblu finally pushed the ball to the other side of the field and scored on Ashley Collins' header off Stephanie Deweese's assist in the 49th minute.
Punahou took a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute on Adria Campbell's penalty kick after she was taken down in the box. The Buffanblu made it 3-1 two minutes later on Pippa Macdonald's short unassisted goal off a loose ball.
"We got a bit disorganized back there and got flustered," Iolani coach Sandy Hamura said. "Plus Punahou was taking more of an offensive (stance) after that first goal. I felt our team in general played pretty well, but Punahou is a lot more physical than Kamehameha."
