Ginepri, Godwin to play for tennis crown

Robby Ginepri and Neville Godwin will face off today in the finals of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger.

Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., beat German Bjorn Phau, 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Godwin of South Africa beat countryman Rik De Voest, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in yesterday's semifinals.

Americans Alex Kim and Levar Harper-Griffith advanced to the doubles final when their opponents, Tomas Behrend of Germany and Alexandre Simoni of Brazil, were forced to retire due to a shoulder injury to Behrend while trailing 2-6, 6-3, 4-0.

Robert Kendrick and Diego Ayala beat another pair of Americans, Paul Goldstein and Devin Bowen, 6-3, 6-4 to advance.

The singles final begins at 11 a.m. with the doubles to follow. Tickets are $10.


SWIMMING

• UH mark falls: University of Hawai'i freshman Andrew Affleck broke a school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle as the UH men's swim team beat the University of Washington, 166-112, yesterday in a dual meet at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

Affleck's time was 15 minutes and 24.64. seconds. The old mark was set in 1981 by David Daniels (15:26.27).

The Rainbow Wahine fell to the Huskies, 171-117. The UH men improved to 13-1 in dual meets, while the women fell to 5-11.


SOFTBALL

• UH tops alumnae: Melissa Coogan allowed one run on two hits as the University of Hawai'i softball team defeated the alumnae, 4-1, yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.


SURFING

Keone Downing and Dave Parmenter each won $1,500 after capturing the titles for their age divisions at the Quiksilver Masters World Championships yesterday at Makaha.

Downing won the Hawai'i Grand Masters division for ages 45 and older, and Parmenter won the Hawai'i Masters division for ages 35-44.

Wayne Bartholomew and Mark Richards share the lead in the Quiksilver Grand Masters rankings after three rounds. Richards is at 12.0, and Bartholomew is at 11.4.
