Power surge disrupts Oceanic TV, Internet service

A power surge today at 9:30 a.m. knocked out cable television service to Oceanic-Time Warner's estimated 250,000 customers on O'ahu.

The Roadrunner computer Internet service also was disrupted by the surge, which knocked out Oceanic's power supply as well as the backup generator, said company president Nate Smith.

Roadrunner was back up by 10:30 a.m. and Smith expected islandwide cable television service to be restored by noon.

"We lost 'em both and that's highly unusual," Smith said of losing initial and backup power. "I don't recall ever losing a backup. The good news for us is that it didn't happen on Super Bowl Sunday."

Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Fred Kobashi kawa said there was a momentary outage caused by one of the 46,000-kilovolt lines between Waiau and Mililani at about 9:30 a.m. Service was not disrupted except at Oceanic, Koba-shikawa said.

"It was only a momentary outage but for some reason, they went out and stayed out," he said.
