Ginepri wins USTA Challenger event on Big Island

American tennis pro Robby Ginepri won the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger, defeating Russia's Neville Godwin, 6-3, 6-3, yesterday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island.

Ginepri, who began the year ranked 101, earned $5,400 and 55 ATP ranking points. Godwin leaves with $3,200 and 38 ATP points.

Ginepri was the highest remaining seed after the first round at No. 3, when the top two seeds were upset. He was a semifinalist in this tournament in 2002 and reached the finals of the 2000 U.S. Open boys' junior finals, where he lost to Andy Roddick, who was a semifinalist in the recently completed Australian Open.

Americans Robert Kendrick and Diego Ayala defeated fellow Americans Alex Kim and Levar Harper-Griffith, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to win the doubles championships. They will split $2,300.


BASEBALL

• Kansas sweeps Hilo: The University of Kansas swept the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-3 and 6-0, yesterday at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona.

In the first game, the Jayhawks scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on two unearned runs, resulting from two walks and a passed ball.

Kansas' Jason Appuhn and Sean Flynn both drove in two runs, and Ryan Baty batted 3-for-3.

In the second game, Kevin Wheeler pitched a two-hit shutout with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Jayhawks' Lance Hayes batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Hilo dropped to 2-10, Kansas improved to 4-2.


MEETINGS

• QB Club: University of Hawai'i baseball coach Mike Trapasso and Iolani boys basketball coach Mark Mugiishi will be the featured speakers at today's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon at the Pagoda Hotel.

The meeting is open to the public and the lunch costs $7.50 for club members and $8 for non-members.


SURFING

• Ho advances: Hawai'i's Derek Ho advanced to the quarterfinals of the Quiksilver Masters, joining defending Masters world champion Gary Elkerton of Australia yesterday at Makaha.

Ho, Elkerton, Barton Lynch, Brad Gerlach, Rob Bain, Mike Parsons, Martin Potter and Tom Curren will meet today in the Masters division (35-44 years), surf permitting.

In the Quiksilver Grand Masters division, three surfers from Hawai'i — Bobby Owens, Buzzy Kerbox and Michael Ho — moved on to the quarterfinals for the Grand Masters division (45 years and older).

Wayne Bartholomew, Paul Neilson, Terry Richardson, Shaun Tomson and Mark Richards round out the field.
