Female traveler caught with gun

A woman has been charged with attempting to smuggle a loaded handgun aboard a United Airlines flight from Honolulu to San Antonio on Friday.

An affidavit filed in federal court yesterday accused Princess Samonte of carrying a loaded .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol aboard United Flight 64.

An airport screener found the gun concealed in Samonte's sock, according to the affidavit, and notified Department of Public Safety officers, who made the arrest.

A firearms check found the gun was unregistered.

Samonte told FBI agents that she traveled with the same weapon from Honolulu to San Antonio earlier in the month without being stopped at a security checkpoint.

She also told agents that she did not know it was illegal for anyone to carry a concealed weapon through an airport checkpoint without a permit.

Autopsy awaited in infant's death

Police are awaiting results from an autopsy performed today to determine if crystal methamphetamine use by the mother of a 3-day-old boy contributed to the infant's death.

The child, who was born prematurely, was taken off life support yesterday at 2:12 p.m.

The mother used crystal meth on the day she gave birth, police said.
