Tonight's Must-See

"Friends" (7 p.m.), "Scrubs" (7:40) and "Will & Grace" (8:20), NBC. This is opening night of the sweeps ratings month, when ratings count more and networks try harder. That's when NBC usually thinks of creative ways to bury one of its Thursday comedies. In this case, it ousts "Good Morning, Miami," with each of the other three comedies running 10 minutes longer in its place:

In "Friends," Ross tries to drop his obsession with Rachel after seeing her kissing Gavin. Meanwhile, Monica gets attention at a piano bar.

In "Scrubs," Elliot finds she's being pursued by a nurse (Rick Schroder). Actor-playwright Eric Bogosian plays Cox's psychiatrist.

And in "Will & Grace," Jack and Will try to introduce Barry to the gay-bar scene. Meanwhile, Grace and Leo have a fight.

Of Note

"Columbo Likes the Nightlife," 7 p.m., ABC. Peter Falk returns to his role as the sly detective. A tabloid reporter has been killed, and the suspects include a promoter and a woman (Jennifer Sky) who was married to a mobster's son.

"Stupid Behavior Caught on Tape" premiere., 7 p.m., Fox. At least this show admits it deals with stupidity.

"The Surreal Life," 9 p.m., WB. Everyone goes to Las Vegas. Vince Neill soon has a meltdown. Corey Feldman and Gabrielle Carteris feud while Emmanuel Lewis stares on in bewilderment.

"C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Tonight, the focus shifts to Warrick Brown, played by Gary Dourdan. He's enraged that a friend's daughter is killed in a drive-by shooting.

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. Ed Asner guest stars as an ill old doctor. As Carter works with him, he finds it a transforming experience.
