Bill restricting driver cell phone use advances
Advertiser Staff
The House Transportation Committee yesterday moved a bill that would limit use of cell phones while driving to hands-free devices.
Transportation Chairman Joe Souki said it was the first time such a measure had been given a hearing at the Legislature, and he thought the bill had a good chance of passage.
"I think it's timely," Souki said. "From my personal observations, there are too many people driving who are using cell phones. It's dangerous."
Opponents say there is no conclusive proof cell phone use causes accidents.
Emergency personnel would be exempt. A violation would carry a maximum fine of $100.
