Kaimuki knocks off Castle, 47-34

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Kaimuki High School boys basketball team jumped back into the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division title chase last night with a 47-34 home victory over previously unbeaten Castle.

The Bulldogs' win, coupled with Kalaheo's overtime victory over previously unbeaten Roosevelt, leaves Castle and Kaimuki each with 6-1 records and just a half game behind first-place Roosevelt (7-1).

Jimmy Miyasaka scored a game-high 18 points and reserve Nick Milan added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who raced to a 22-5 lead midway through the second period. Castle closed to 35-31 early in the fourth quarter, but Kaimuki finished with a 12-3 run to seal it.

"I told our kids before the game that we gotta win in order to get a chance (for the East title)," Bulldogs coach Stephen Lee said. "If we want that opportunity, we had to win tonight, and we came out on fire."

Kaimuki all-star forward Daniel Tautofi was held to six points and two field goals, but he finished with a game-high 13 rebounds. Milan added three rebounds and a block, and his three-point play with just over a minute remaining gave the Bulldogs a 43-34 lead.

Emmett Aberilla led the Knights with 13 points.

Castle had only two points on one field goal until the end of the first period, when Aberilla drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Knights also were limited to five points in the final quarter and were shut out in the final two minutes.

"Kaimuki played real good defense, that was their strength tonight," Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli said. "We worked on breaking their zone, but we just couldn't find the open spots."
