Delay in hiring of UHH volleyball coach

By Brandon Masuoka

The approval process for a new clause that will require the Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball coach to raise money has delayed the hiring for the position from mid-February to mid-April, a top-ranking school official said yesterday.

The vacancy was created when longtime coach Sharon Peterson announced her retirement on Dec. 4. Peterson, who coached the Vulcans for 25 years, served her last day on Dec. 31. The signing deadline for recruits is in April.

UH-Hilo assistant athletic director Jim DeMello said the school wanted to insert a fund-raising clause in the new coach's job description, the first update since 1985. The school sought approval for the job description change on Dec. 27 and completed the process Tuesday, he said.

"Now we're putting it in writing that you are required to fund-raise," DeMello said. "In the past it wasn't that way."

The new volleyball coach is expected to raise 20 percent of the sport's $59,000 operating budget, DeMello said.

The position will be advertised as soon as the end of this week, DeMello said. The position pays a range of $34,032 to $51,036.

DeMello said the school has received about a handful of resumes or inquiries. He said he expected "15 to 20 applications" once the job is advertised in the newspapers and on selected Web sites.

UH-Hilo athletic director Kathleen McNally earlier said she wanted the coach to be hired before Feb. 15. She called the position "a premier job."

"We play in one of the best conferences in the nation," McNally said. "We've got a great location to play at. We have high academic standards. You could really create a dynasty here."

BASKETBALL

• Hawai'i teams among best: The top two teams in the Pacific West Conference standings are among the top four teams in the NCAA II West Region men's basketball poll this week.

Hawai'i-Hilo (12-5) sits at No. 3 for the second straight week. BYU-Hawai'i (10-2) moves up from No. 5 to No. 4.

The top three teams in the poll remained the same from a week ago. Humboldt State (15-1) from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has been No. 1 since the first poll of the season.

Cal State-San Bernardino (11-4) from the California Collegiate Athletic Association is No. 2 for the second week after losing its first four games of the season. Cal State-San Bernardino is the defending West Region champion.
