Teller prevents bank robbery

A teller at American Savings Bank's Ala Moana Center branch thwarted a robbery yesterday by walking away from her window after receiving a demand note.

Although the male suspect in the 5:49 p.m. holdup fled without any money, the case is classified as a bank robbery. It was the sixth this month and third since Jan. 22.

Suspect charged in sexual assault

Police have charged a 39-year-old man in connection with a sex assault on a 14-year-old girl that occurred a week ago today.

Leuii Mamea is charged with two counts of first-degree sex assault and is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.

Work-program participant caught

A 46-year-old man who failed to return to the Laumaka Work Furlough program on Jan. 13 was captured early today in Chinatown, police said.

Escape charges are pending against Jack Lopes, who was caught at 1:05 a.m. while running on the roadway at Kukui and North Beretania streets.
