HPU rolls to win over Chaminade

Leandro Maruoka scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Hawai'i Pacific University to an 87-78 PacWest Conference men's basketball victory over Chaminade at Blaisdell Arena last night.

Nic Walters added 17 points for HPU, which improved to 13-5 overall and 2-4 in league.

Mike Donegan led Chaminade (9-9, 4-2) with 17 points, and pulled down 11 rebounds.

UH athletics

• No smoking policy: The University of Hawai'i will be enforcing a smoke-free policy at its athletics facilities starting with tomorrow's UH alumni baseball game at Les Murakami Stadium.

This policy affects all facilities on the Manoa campus, including the outdoor venues of Les Murakami Stadium, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and field, Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex and Cooke Field.

The policy was created by a university-wide coalition of faculty, staff and students and affects all 10 campuses of the University of Hawai'i system.

UH SOFTBALL

• UH has tough schedule: Nine of the top 25 softball teams in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll — and four in the top 10 — are on the University of Hawai'i softball team's schedule this year.

Hawai'i will face No. 6 Washington on Feb. 7 in the Chevron Paradise Classic and again in the Kia Klassic in mid-March.

Also, UH will play No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 California, and No. 23 Oregon State in the UNLV Rebel Tournament from Feb. 14-16.

Tenth-ranked Cal State Fullerton and No. 12 Texas are in the the Kia Klassic in California; and at the Hawai'i Invitational March 20-23, No. 16 Ohio State and No. 21 Pacific will face the Rainbow Wahine.

Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State is No. 15. No other WAC schools received votes.

UH opens its season Thursday in the Chevron Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, in a doubleheader against Louisville (6 p.m.) and Oklahoma State (8 p.m.).

• No admission charge: All University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine softball games this season will be free to the public, UH athletic director Herman Frazier announced yesterday.

VOLLEYBALL

• USA Volleyball tryouts set: USA Volleyball will hold tryouts for girls and boys for its high performance youth camp and national teams March 1-2 at the University of Hawai'i's Gym 1.

The girls tryouts will be March 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1986 are eligible to try out for the youth national team, while girls born after Jan. 1, 1988 are eligible to tryout for the camp.

The boys tryouts will be March 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Boys born on or after Jan. 1, 1985 are eligible to try out for the national team, while boys born on or after Jan. 1, 1987 can try out for the camp.
