THE LEFT LANE
Skip sun-dried kisses

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Beachgoers may slather on sunscreen from head to toe but many overlook an almost obvious sun target: the lips.

Maybe it's because some women wear their everyday non-SPF lipstick when they go to the beach or pool, and maybe men are used to not wearing any "makeup." Either way, sun worshippers need to consider the lips, which are among the most sun-sensitive parts of the body.

Kiehl's Since 1851 offers new lip balms with Sun Protection Factor 15 in two tints and a clear formula.

Biking for arthritis

JOCELYN CHONG
Former Hawai'i Junior Miss Jocelyn Chong is bicycling across America this summer to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation.

On June 14, Chong began a nine-week trek across 12 states. Her goal is to pedal more than 4,100 miles. Chong, 22, a 1998 University High alumna, graduated from Brown University in 2002 and teaches math, history and Chinese at La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls. She hopes to raise more than $10,000 to fight arthritis, a disease that afflicts one in four people, including 300,000 children. To contribute, send donations to: Arthritis Foundation, Attn: Coast to Coast, 615 Pi'ikoi St., Suite 1812, Honolulu, HI 96814.

Audition for 'Gypsy'

So you never quite made it out to last season's "American Idol" auditions, and the theater was too dark for anyone to see you dancing along with the movie "Chicago." Not to worry: you still have a chance to strut your stuff in the coming musical production of "Gypsy."

Auditions and call-backs will be at 7:30 tonight at Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter.

The show will run in September. Call 438-4480.

'Celebrate Freedom'

Larnelle Harris' six Grammy and 12 Dove awards are probably too numerous and too bulky to fit in his suitcase. However, his musical talent will be a little easier to tote when he comes to Hawai'i tomorrow.

Harris will participate in the Celebrate Freedom event at the Waikiki Shell. His sound retains a gospel core, while imbuing it with the pop sense of crisp percussion and rich horns — a synthesis of traditional and modern styles perfect for the Fourth.

Nalani Choy of Na Leo joins the concert to debut her newest CD project. Trisha Nakamoto, Ben Vegas, and Malia Gibson will also perform.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with the concert starting at 6 p.m. Call 533-0065.

Cleaning with power

A vacuum/toolbox combination seems an invention long overdue. But now, Eureka has created a Toolbox Vac.

The new Eureka Toolbox Vac offers a powerful (6-amp motor) vacuum with 5-foot hose and attachments, crevice wand and dusting/upholstery brush that all fit within the toolbox lid. The vacuum also serves as a power blower. Within the main toolbox compartment is a 110-volt auxiliary power outlet, a tool tray and ample space for storage.

The Eureka Toolbox Vac retails for $69.99 and is available at area home stores, including Lowe's.

Call (877) 270-9289.

Correction: Larnelle Harris will participate in the Celebrate Freedom event at the Waikiki Shell tomorrow night. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with the concert starting at 6 p.m. The date and gate opening times were incorrect in a previous version of this column.
