WINDWARD

Marine base to keep workers

The federally mandated Commercial Activities program, which reviewed Marine Corps Base Hawai'i's business practices, yesterday concluded that the commercial activities at the base at Kane'ohe are competitive and will continue to be performed by federal employees, rather than by a contractor.

The decision is a victory for more than 150 civilian workers who perform maintenance jobs including utility, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and grounds work.

There is a standard appeal process for the decision.

Kane'ohe to get artillery noise

Windward residents can expect noise booms today as blank artillery is fired on Marine Corps Base Hawai'i as part of a 3rd Marine Regiment change of command ceremony. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.

Kailua Fourth parade Friday

The Kailua Chamber of Commerce will hold its Fourth of July parade beginning at 10 a.m. Friday near Oma'o Street on Kainalu Drive. The parade will be followed by the Kailua Towne Freedom Festival from noon to 4 p.m. at Kailua District Park gym with food, entertainment and games.

Parking will be available at the park, Kailua Intermediate School after 12:30 p.m. and Kailua Elementary School.

A fireworks display — resurrected after being canceled — will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Kailua Beach Park and will be preceded by an air show.

Hawai'i Kai project praised

Stanford Carr Development has won three Golden Nugget Awards of Merit from the building industry for its Peninsula at Hawai'i Kai development. The 600-unit development on Lunalilo Home Road was the only Hawai'i project to win the merit award.

The award was given by the Pacific Coast Builders Conference for best community site plan for under 100-acre developments for Carr's Carriage Ways and Executive Residences at the conference last month.

Fire damages Waipahu home

A Waipahu home was heavily damaged in a fire yesterday afternoon.

The fire at 94-120 Awamoku St. was reported at 4:47 p.m. Firefighters had the blaze under control within 12 minutes, but not before it destroyed the home's second floor, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Although the fire did not spread to the first floor, there was smoke and water damage there, Tejada said. Two men who live there were not at home and there were no reports of injuries.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the two men last night.

Damages were estimated at $240,000, Tejada said.

Correction: The Fourth of July fireworks show at Kailua Beach Park is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday. An article in a previous version of these briefs gave an incorrect time.
