Charles S. Bouslog, 91, retired UH professor

Charles Scott Bouslog, who retired in 1974 as an English professor at the University of Hawai'iiManoa, died June 13 at St. Francis-West Hospice. He was 91.

During his 30 years at UH-Manoa, Bouslog served as department chairman for two terms and was involved in the formation of the department of American studies and the East-West Center.

The native of Shirley, Ind., arrived in Hawai'i in 1939 to teach in the English department at UH. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as an intelligence officer in India and Burma. He earned a Ph.D. in English from Harvard University in 1951 and returned to UH.

After his retirement, Bouslog volunteered at Lyon Arboretum and contributed to Hawai'i history journals and books.

He was the first husband of prominent labor lawyer Harriet Bouslog, who died in 1998.

Bouslog is survived by his wife, Nobuko; a son, Christopher; a daughter, Ann; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 1 to 4 p.m. July 12 at Lyon Arboretum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Arthritis Foundation or Lyon Arboretum.
