UH's Willoughby WAC's top female

Kim Willoughby, Hawai'i's two-time volleyball All American, was honored yesterday with the 2002-03 Joe Kearney Award that is given to the top female and male athlete in the Western Athletic Conference.

WILLOUGHBY
Willoughby, a junior from Napoleonville, La., led the Rainbow Wahine to the semifinals of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Hawai'i lost to Stanford, 3-0, and finished the season ranked third in the nation. In addition to earning her second straight WAC Player of the Year honor, Willoughby was named an AVCA first-team All American and was selected to the NCAA Championship all-tournament team.

Willoughby led the WAC and was second in the nation in kills per game with 6.31. She also led the WAC in service aces with 76, and finished third in hitting percentage at .342.

Willoughby also played basketball and was named to the all-WAC tournament team.

Fresno State senior golfer Nick Watney was named the male recipient of the award, named in honor of the former WAC commissioner.

UH football lineman Vince Manuwai was one of the 10 male nominees.
