SAILING
And they're off ... finally: The starting gun fired for the first of three starts in the 42nd Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawai'i yesterday. And no one budged.
On a warm summer day with a breeze of only 2 knots and an opposing current of 1 1/2 knots, 25 boats were left sailing in place.
A few minutes later, the fleet of Division 5 boats slowly got on its way for the 2,225 nautical-mile journey.
Divisions 3 and 4 will start Friday, followed by Divisions 1 and 2 on Sunday.
Yesterday's fleet included a Cal 40 named Seafire, one of four Hawai'i entries.
"We're going home!" a crew member yelled as Seafire sailed past a press boat.
Starbuck, a Black Soo 31, withdrew Monday, leaving the total fleet count at 58, still the largest in 18 years.
