Bills forwarded on peddling ban

Peddlers who sell their wares in Kekaulike Mall in Chinatown are a step closer to being forced to move shop under three bills moving through the City Council.

The council yesterday forwarded to committee bills which would ban peddlers from selling fruit, vegetables and other goods along the mall. However, shopkeepers who rent space along the mall would still be allowed to sell their product along the mall.

The public hearing drew only one person, Lynne Matusow, chairwoman of the Downtown Neighborhood Board, who spoke in favor of the ban. Council members said they will try to hold another public hearing.
