Lee sued by former Saint Louis player

Advertiser Staff

Cal Lee, a former Saint Louis School athletic director and head football coach, is being sued by a former Crusader football player who claims Lee instructed former assistant coach Georges Gilbert to kick the player's behind during a practice session in September 2001.

The lawsuit, filed in Circuit Court yesterday by Honolulu attorney Michael McCarthy on behalf of former football player Michael Houar and Houar's parents, Matthew and Clarisse Houar, also names Gilbert and the school as defendants in the case.

After being told of details in the complaint, Lee said the alleged incident "didn't happen." Lee declined further comment until he receives a copy of the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims the school was negligent in hiring and retaining Lee and Gilbert as coaches, was negligent in supervising the two men and failed to protect Houar from the actions of the two.

The lawsuit asks for general, special and punitive damages with the amounts, if any, to be determined at trial.

Lee, 56, retired as the Crusaders' head coach in December 2001. He resigned as the school's athletic director Monday to accept a coaching job on the University of Hawai'i's football staff.

Lee also is head coach of the Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2, a position that pays $40,000 annually. Lee said a recent Advertiser story was incorrect in reporting he received an additional salary from the Islanders.
