Hawai'i girls win volleyball crown

The Maunalani Volleyball Club of Honolulu won the 2003 USA Girls' Junior Olympic Volleyball Championship 18-and-under division yesterday in Atlanta, Ga.

Maunalani finished 11-1 in the 64-team tournament that was played at the World Congress Center.

Maunalani defeated the defending champions from Orem, Utah, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14, in the semifinals before sweeping Nashville, Tenn., 25-17, 25-19, in the final.

The Utah team featured the Gatorade national player of the year, Kristen Richards, who will play for Stanford this season.

"Our team has come in second place for the past two years and this year, we ended up winning it," Maunalani coach Chris Blake said. "We've been right on the doorstep for the past two years, and this year we walked right through."

Kanoe Kamana'o, Alicia Arnott and Mounia Nihipali were named to the all-tournament team. Kamana'o was named MVP. Other team members: Juliana Sanders, Kekai Crabbe, Lori Nakamura, Puna Richardson, Lacey Lavarias and Crisi Nihipali.

GOLF

Castillo Jr. falls: Lance Taketa eliminated defending champion Ron Castillo Jr. before also being ousted from the Aloha Section PGA Turtle Bay Resort Match Play Championship yesterday.

Taketa beat Castillo Jr, 2 and 1, in the championship division quarterfinals. Beau Yokomoto then defeated Taketa, 3 and 2, in the semifinals to reach today's 36-hole final against Kevin Hayashi.

Rich Fite will meet Mike Iyoki in the senior division final.

Play begins at 7 a.m.

Senior Division — Semifinals: Rich Fite def. Larry Ordonio, 5 and 4; Mike Iyoki def. Larry Stubblefield, 2 and 1.

SOCCER

Ching scores twice: Brian Ching of Hale'iwa scored two first-half goals — the first multi--goal game of his career — as the San Jose Earthquakes tied the MetroStars, 4-4, last night.

Ching's first goal was a volley off a corner kick in the 14th minute. He scored 20 minutes later, when he struck a ball between a defender's legs.

It was Ching's first game back since a hamstring injury he suffered in the last week of May.

Ching, a 1996 graduate of Kamehameha, leads the Earthquakes (6-2-5) with five goals.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Makakilo wins states: Chadwick Kaalekahi struck out 11 and allowed one hit in six innings as Makakilo defeated Halawa, 3-0, in the Little League Minors (ages 9-10) State Tournament championship game yesterday at Kapa'a Field on Kaua'i.

This age division does not advance to regional play.
