East Honolulu fire contained

Honolulu firefighters kept watch last night on a brushfire that came to within 50 feet of several homes in East Honolulu.

The fire was reported at 4:47 p.m. near Kealahou Street in Kalama Valley and spread up Kamehame Ridge, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada. There was no report of damage, he said. The fire was declared contained at about 6:30, but was not extinguished. Tejada said crews would be checking on the smoldering fire periodically through the night.

Three hurt in head-on crash

Three people were injured, one critically, in a head-on collision yesterday near the Lana'i Lookout. Police said a 1998 Nissan SUV was heading north on Kalaniana'ole Highway when it crossed the double-solid line and hit an oncoming 2002 Nissan SUV. The south-bound Nissan turned over and landed in a ditch at about 4:40 p.m.

The 41-year-old Honolulu man driving the south-bound vehicle was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. His 49-year-old female passenger was in serious condition at Queen's. The driver of the other vehicle, a 25-year-old Kailua man, was in serious condition at Queen's.
