Goosen tied for European Open lead

Retief Goosen birdied the last hole and shot a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to move into a three-way tie for the lead after the first round of the European Open at Straffan, Ireland.

The former U.S. Open champion was tied with Phillip Price and Alastair Forsyth, one shot ahead of five players.

Darren Clarke, Gary Murphy, Soren Hansen, Andrew Coltart and Fredrik Andersson all shot 67. Colin Montgomerie shot a 68 and was two strokes off the lead with Gary Evans and Mark McNulty.

A shot by Clarke at the 11th hole hit a tree and then struck the pregnant wife of playing partner Stephen Leaney.

Tracey Leaney sustained a small cut on her head and was released from the medical unit after two hours of observation.

USGA

• Golf balls up to par: The U.S. Golf Association, one of the sport's two governing bodies, has proposed a second phase of changes to the 27-year-old method used to determine if a golf ball conforms to the game's rules.

The proposed changes, designed to update the current distance standard to 320 yards from 296.8 yards, reflect the increased swing speed of today's players and changes in technology, the Far Hills, N.J.-based USGA said.

The proposal is part of an on-going examination of golf equipment. Tuesday, U.S. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem disclosed plans to begin voluntary testing of drivers at PGA Tour events beginning no later than January to "get the rumors out of the game." Some players, including world No. 1 Tiger Woods, have accused others of using illegal clubs.

"The new test is really a common sense approach that can test balls under swing speed, equipment, and launch conditions used by today's longer-hitting PGA Tour players," USGA technical director Dick Rugge said in a statement. "It's designed to enhance our test procedures, not take balls off the Conforming Ball List."
