Nakama swim meet to feature 479 athletes

The 55th Keo Nakama Swimming Invitational will be today through Sunday at Punahou Schools pool.

There will be 479 athletes from 31 teams, including teams from California, Arizona and Guam.

Three of the top teams from Hawai'i, Kamehameha Swim Club, Hawai'i Swimming Club and Iolani will also participate

Nakama won four men's NCAA titles at Ohio State in 1943 and 1944. He also won 27 U.S. national titles.

The opening ceremony will be this morning at 8.

Nakama, who is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, will be at the awards ceremony Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

Admission is free for spectators.



SURFING

Surf contest July 12-13: The Walking on Water amateur surf contest will run July 12-13 at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Christian Surfers Hawai'i is sponsoring the contest. Entry fee is $50, or $30 with a 25-pound donation of food. Entry fees will be donated to the Children's Cancer Foundation, while food will be given to the Waimanalo Food Drive.

Entry forms are available at area surf shops, or by calling 222-2539. Entry deadline is Monday.
