Tonight's Must-See
"Election" (1999), 7 p.m., FX. In this darkly funny film, Matthew Broderick is a high school teacher obsessed with making sure an arrogant student (Reese Witherspoon) isn't elected class president.
Of Note
"The Wizard of Oz" (1939), 2 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. Here's a fresh chance to see a classic.
"American Graffiti" (1973), 5 & 9:30 p.m., AMC. Four years before he directed "Star Wars," George Lucas showed immense talent here reflecting his days as a California teen. The drama-comedy boosted such relative unknowns as Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Kathy Quinlan and (briefly) Harrison Ford and Suzanne Somers.
"Apocalypse Now Redux" (2001, re-edited from 1979 film), 5 p.m., Bravo. Here's director Francis Ford Coppola's new version of his Vietnam classic.
"Star Trek: First Contact" (1996), 7 p.m., ABC. The most potent scenes here have Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in a battle of wills with the Borg Queen (Alice Krige). Meanwhile, the crew races back in time to make sure an odd scientist makes his rocket journey.
