FAITH BRIEFS
Judge to discuss pledge ruling

Advertiser Staff

Judge Richard Clifton of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals speaks on the issue of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance at Central Union Church tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. In June 2002, an appeals court ruling banned teacher-led reciting of the pledge in public schools because of the phrase "under God."

The 9th Circuit upheld the appeals court ruling earlier this year; the U.S. Supreme Court will decide later this year whether to review the 9th Circuit ruling.

Clifton, the second Hawai'i resident to sit on the court, will also speak about other church and state issues from the perspective of the 9th Circuit. Central Union Church is sponsoring the event as part of an adult education program. Admission is free.

Night of organ music planned

The Lutheran Church of Honolulu will host an evening of organ music on Thursday beginning at 7:30. Organist Erik Floan will treat audiences to an international program as he plays the church's Von Beckerath organ.

The program will include works by German composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude, French composer Maurice Durufle, and American composer Daniel Pinkham. The Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir will sing. Admission is free. Donations toward repairs to the organ will be welcomed.

Floan is an accomplished organist from Minnesota, and has made professional appearances across North America and in Southeast Asia. For information: Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St., 941-2566.

Contemplative talk slated

"Power of Silence," an evening event celebrating the richness of Christian contemplative heritage, will be July 13, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Arico at Holy Trinity Church. Arico will speak about Lectio Divinia, the praying of the Scriptures, and Centering Prayer.

Arico is the author of "A Taste of Silence," and is vice president of Contemplative Outreach Ltd., an international network of small faith communities committed to renewing the contemplative dimension of the Gospel in everyday life.
