Car drags officer 30 feet in incident on Big Island

A Big Island police officer was dragged by a car about 30 feet in an incident Thursday evening in Puna, police said.

The officer, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Puna Community Policing Unit, was attending a function at the Pahoa Community Center when he observed a motorist driving recklessly in the parking lot at about 7 p.m., the report said.

The officer flagged down the driver on Ka'u Hale Street, but the driver accelerated, with the officer's arm caught in the window. The officer was able to get his arm loose, but suffered abrasions to his arm, back and legs, police said .

The motorist sped away, and police have identified a possible suspect. Witnesses are asked to call police at 935-3311.
