Tournament raises $20,000

The 7th Annual "Helping the Community" golf tournament raised $20,000 for local charities that provide medical care and resources, food and nonperishable items to those in need, and community programs.

The May 30 tournament at Honolulu Country Club was organized by Dick Pacific Construction Co. Ltd., and featured more than 200 golfers. The event has raised more than $145,000 for charities since its start in 1997.



Alliance for art gets money

The Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education has been awarded $28,000 from Partners for Livable Communities for its three-year strategic plan for The ARTS at Marks Garage, a collaboration of art groups providing exhibit and performance space for artists.



$15,000 to aid opera theater

The Hawai'i Opera Theatre has received a $15,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation to help its education outreach programs, including Opera for Everyone, Opera Residency and Opera Express.

The nonprofit Hawai'i Opera Theatre produces three operas each season and offers year-round educational programs.



PAAC program given $5,000

Friends of Hawaii Charities has given $5,000 to the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council to finance an after-school class at Wai'anae High School. The class is part of a global education program at Hawai'i high schools.

PAAC is a private, nonprofit organization that seeks to promote increased awareness of international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, with special emphasis on Asia and the Pacific.



EPA leader gets beach grant

Wayne Nastri, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Pacific Southwest regional administrator, has been awarded a $324,592 beach grant by the Hawai'i Department of Health to monitor beach water quality and notify the public of water-quality problems.



Bank supports Samoa athletes

Bank of Hawaii announced it is donating $5,000 to the American Samoa National Olympic Committee to support the country's Olympic athletes at the South Pacific Games being held through Saturday in Fiji.

Events will include archery, track and field, baseball, golf, field hockey, sailing, tennis, weightlifting and powerlifting.
