ISLE FILE
Islanders gain playoff berth

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaiian Islanders clinched their first playoff berth in arenafootball2 yesterday when Tennessee Valley defeated Memphis, 51-36, at Southhaven, Miss.

The Islanders, who were idle this week, are 9-4 and lead the National West Division by a game with three games remaining. They play at Tulsa on Saturday. The Islanders, who were 5-11 last season, are playing their second season in af2.

The af2 playoffs will feature 12 teams, six (three division winners and three wildcards) from each the American and National conferences. The wildcards are determined by overall record.

The loss by Memphis (5-8) ensured the Islanders of at least a wildcard berth based on their record. Tennessee Valley (13-0), which leads the American South, is the only undefeated af2 team.

VOLLEYBALL

• Hawai'i third: The Hawai'i All-Stars finished tied for third in the 18-open division in the USA Junior Olympic Boys' Volleyball Championships in Phoenix, Ariz.

Hawai'i lost to Northshore of Milwaukee, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11, in the semifinals, and did not play a third-place match.

Hawai'i's Max DeWolff, Jonathan Charette, and Isaac Kneubuhl were named to the all-tournament team.

It was the highest finish for a Hawai'i team since 1990, when it won the tournament.

MEETING

• Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i defensive line coach Vantz Singletary, K5's baseball commentator Pal Eldredge and cockfighting advocate Waldermar Doane will be the speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant, with the program following at noon.
