Longs trimming manager jobs

Longs Drug Stores Corp., seeking to cut costs, implemented a voluntary separation program for managers of its retail stores. The drug store chain, based in Walnut Creek, Calif., said the program offers financial incentives based on years of service and base salary, as well as company-paid health insurance benefits and outplacement services.Longs has 463 store managers, who represent about 2 percent of its total work force of 22,000. In February, Longs announced plans to cut 170 jobs, primarily in its California offices and to improve the performance at 25 underperforming stores. Longs has 31 stores in Hawai'i.
