• MARSHA WIENERT, who took over this month as the state's first Cabinet-level tourism liaison, will speak to an upcoming luncheon meeting of the Travel and Tourism Research Association. Plans for the new position were first announced during Gov. Linda Lingle's campaign as a means to raise the profile of the $10 billion visitor industry among state agencies and push tourism issues to the forefront of the governor's agenda. Industry leaders also want to see better coordination between state tourism officials and government departments. One the first announced goals for Wienert, former executive director of Maui Visitors Bureau, will be to increase flights into Hawai'i from Mainland and international destinations. • Former "20/20" television program host HUGH DOWNS, a recognized expert on retirement issues, will be featured in a series of free presentations for retirees, sponsored by the Edward Jones financial firm. The free, interactive program, "HOW'S RETIREMENT TREATING YOU?," is part of a nationwide presentation on the Edward Jones private satellite video network. In the program, Downs and a panel of experts will offer 10 guidelines to help retirees live, work and play on their own terms. • The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, scheduled 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., will offer advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE. • Members of the local hotel and restaurant industry trade are among those invited to the upcoming Ninth Annual Hawaii Lodging, Hospital and Foodservice Expo. Formerly known as the Hawai'i Hotel & Restaurant Expo, the trade show is scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Blaisdell Center. The event is also is expected to attract attendance from a wide-ranging spectrum of businesses, including health clubs, government agencies, architectural firms, schools, hospitals, military bases, cruise ships, shopping centers and grocery stores — even churches. One highlight of this year's event will be a High Technology Pavilion, showcasing a variety of technology products, services and equipment, including bio-scanners, electronic key cards, electric vehicles and satellite radio and video equipment.
