Sexual-violence work lauded

Andriana Ramelli, executive director of the Kapi'olani Health Sex Abuse Treatment Center, has been presented with the 2003 Outstanding Advocacy and Community Work in Ending Sexual Violence Award from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. The award is given "in recognition of exceptional work in the significant task of eliminating sexual violence, assisting others and promoting health and safety."

Ramelli has been with the Sex Abuse Treatment Center at Kapi'olani for 21 years. She has a master's degree in social work from the University of Hawai'i. The center's crisis hot-line numbers are 524-7273 and 535-7600.


Five get $1,000 scholarships

Market City Foundation has awarded $1,000 scholarships to five graduating seniors from O'ahu. Sam Peng Ho of Kaimuki High School plans to study civil or architectural engineering; Marsha Sumfeh Ng of Kalani High School will study marketing and international business at Claremont McKenna College; Noah K.K. Sakimura of Kalani High School plans to study engineering; Lizzeth C. Carreon of Sacred Hearts Academy will study mathematics; and Ling Lu, also of Sacred Hearts Academy, will begin her studies in pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame.

The Market City Foundation Scholarship Program was founded in 1993, to support the Kaimuki and Kapahulu communities by recognizing outstanding high-school students for their academic achievements. The scholarships go toward tuition and expenses at the college or university of their choice. Winners are selected based on their academics, extracurricular activities and financial need.


Campbell grad awarded grant

Campbell High School graduate Jocylynn Stephenson has been awarded the University of Virginia DuPont grant totaling $13,400 over four years to attend the University of Virginia. Stephenson plans to major in psychology.


Organists' guild honors six

The Hawai'i Chapter of the American Guild of Organists has awarded scholarships to Clayton Logue of Maui and Edric Tapusoa, Flora Choi, Scott Cayabyab, Rachel DeBos, and Joey Fala of O'ahu. Tapusoa has also been designated as the Aloha Music Club Scholar.


Graduate gets Wal-Mart award

Razel Einmo, a 2003 graduate of Mililani High School, received a $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarship from the Wal-Mart Foundation and Mililani Wal-Mart store. The scholarship is part of the Sam Walton Community Leader Award program which will award $8 million in scholarships this year to students nationwide.
