Kane'ohe captures Hui Wa'a's Koa Kai Regatta

The girls 16-and-younger race at the Koa Kai Regatta was won by Manu O Ke Kai in 4 minutes, 38.76 seconds.

Monica Shiroma and Malia Samson of Hawaiian Outrigger's girls 14-and-younger team may be from a small Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a club, but it did not stop their crew from qualifying for the state paddling championships.

Shiroma and Samson's crew finished second to Kane'ohe's girls yesterday in the Koa Kai Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon — which Kane'ohe won — to clinch one of two spots. Kane'ohe earned the other girls 14-and-younger spot in the state championships.

"We're always back and forth," said Samson of the rivalry with Kane'ohe.

Samson added that for her team to be competitive with crews from bigger squads, which have more talent to pick from, it needs continuity.

Shiroma said her team did better than the past two weeks because crewmate Hali Aloha Travis, who was out for knee surgery, came back.

Kane'ohe Canoe Club's 16-and-younger boys crew paddles in after winning at the Koa Kai Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Kane'ohe won the club AAA Division title for the sixth time in seven Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regattas this season.

"To have to switch to a different girl is hard for us," Shiroma said. "It proved that we really needed her. Having her makes us feel more secure. We all have a bond together."

Hawaiian Outrigger lives in a different world than Kane'ohe. While Kane'ohe is in a constant dogfight with Lokahi for Hui Wa'a supremacy, Hawaiian Outrigger struggles to be competitive.

Pursuing a Hui Wa'a championship is not in Hawaiian Outrigger's, or any of the other small clubs', minds but qualifying for states is.

All crews are vying to accumulate enough season points to finish at least second in their age group, qualifying them for the state championships.

The Hui Wa'a Championship on July 19 at Ke'ehi Lagoon will be the last chance for crews to earn points. The state finals are Aug. 2 at Ke'ehi.

Winning regattas requires numbers, but qualifying for states is a different story.

"It's not numbers per se — it's how you take care of those numbers," Kane'ohe assistant coach Junior Parrilla said. "It comes down to fundamentals. Our coaches have done an excellent job."

Kane'ohe did an excellent job yesterday, winning 14 races, including 10 youth races, to take the AAA division — for clubs that enter more than 14 races — with 92 points. Kane'ohe has won six of seven regattas this season.

Lokahi, which finished second with 71 points, was not able to close the lead the Kane'ohe youth crews built despite winning eight adult races, including the prestigious senior men's and senior women's races.

The Lokahi women have won 53 straight Hui Wa'a races, while the men have won the past four.

Regatta host Koa Kai, which honored open division men's coach Dave Randall for his contributions to the club, took the AA division for clubs that enter nine to 17 races. Koa Kai had five wins.

"When we host we try to have more fun," said Koa Kai head coach Joe Kim. "After we clean up we'll have a mobile-disco, a dance contest, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments."

Waikiki Beach Boys won three races as it took the A division for clubs that enter six to eight races.
