Hawai'i's Bonga Perkins placed third in the Caparica Surf Classic longboard contest Sunday, and moved into the No. 1 position on the World Longboard Tour.
The final day of the week-long contest was held in 1- to 2-foot waves at Praia Nova, Costa da Caparica, Portugal.
Joel Tudor of California had a two-wave score of 16.9 (out of 20) to place first. Paulo Kid of Brazil was second with a score of 13.8, followed by Perkins' 12.5.
All competitors had to ride surfboards at least 9 feet long.
Through two of six events on the World Longboard Tour, Perkins has 643 points. Kid and Jason Ribbink of South Africa are tied for second with 630. Perkins, the 1996 world champion, is the only Hawai'i surfer ranked in the top 15.
