English on Pacers' summer roster

The summer of decisions continued yesterday for former University of Hawai'i basketball player Carl English.

English will play only for the Indiana Pacers' summer league team this month, according to his agent, Harold Cipin.

English had planned on playing in non-conflicting summer leagues for both Indiana and Minnesota. But yesterday, Cipin said he decided to remove English from the Timberwolves' summer roster.

"We decided it would be in his best interest to play in one (summer) league and not two," Cipin said. "He's already had a busy schedule since (June), and playing in two leagues would have been a lot to ask."

English participated in a mini-camp with the Pacers in Indianapolis last week, and earned a spot on their summer league roster.

"He had an outstanding showing, and that can only help his chances," Cipin said.

English will play with Indiana in the Rocky Mountain Revue, a summer league in Salt Lake City, July 18-26.

"It looks like a better situation," English said. "And it gives me some time to rest. I'm going home (to Newfoundland, Canada) for a couple days and then I'll be ready to go."

Cipin said the Pacers are now English's main focus in terms of seeking a free-agent contract. However, he added that English can still sign with any NBA team.

"At this point and time, we're trying to position Carl in a way that he will be able to show his abilities and land a contract with an NBA team," Cipin said. "Because the (Rocky Mountain Revue) has a little more exposure than some of the other leagues, we decided to go there."

English was not selected in the June 26 NBA Draft after declaring for early entry following his junior season.

English could compete against two of his former UH teammates this summer: Predrag Savovic just completed his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets, and will likely play in the summer league; Troy Ostler, who has played the last two seasons in Latvia, is on the New York Knicks' summer league team.

Former Brigham Young-Hawai'i star Alexus Foyle is currently participating in a mini-camp for the Nuggets and could also make the summer league roster. Yuta Tabuse, another former BYUH player who is originally from Japan, is on the Dallas Mavericks' summer league roster.
