'Ewa/'Ewa Beach claims baseball title

Lonnie Santiago had three hits, and Layson Alivado and Walter Contrades had two apiece as 'Ewa/'Ewa Beach defeated Mililani A, 11-8, in the PONY Mustang (ages 9-10) State Tournament championship game yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

'Ewa/'Ewa Beach advances to the West Zone Regional at Chino Hills, Calif., July 31-Aug. 4.

Kewby Myers had two hits for Mililani.

Meanwhile, it was announced that the Mililani A team that won the state Bronco (ages 11-12) championship Monday will advance directly to the PONY World Series in Monterey, Calif., Aug. 7-14.

The team was awarded the Asia-Pacific Zone's berth because of problems related to the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak in Asia.

SPEED CLINIC

• Finale on Maui: The Hawai'i Speed and Quickness Clinic heads into the home stretch this weekend with the final sessions of the year.

From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, there is a free coaches clinic at Maui's Baldwin High.

Saturday, also at Baldwin, there are sessions for ages 8-12 (10 a.m.-noon) and 13-and-older (2:30-4:30 p.m.). The $10 fee includes refreshments and snacks. Participants are asked to register an hour before each session.

Hawai'i coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura are the featured instructors.

JUDO

• Summer camp coming up: The International Summer Judo Camp will bring together instructors and students from the United States, Switzerland and Japan, July 21-27, at the Tokai University Pacific Center.

Instructors include Teruyoshi Yamaguchi, director of the Judo Program at Hawai'i Tokai International College, and Hidetoshi Nakanishi, the 1983 world champion at under-71 kilograms (156 pounds).

The cost of the clinic is $25, while the cost for the clinic, lectures and Japanese lectures is $70. Room and board is available for $40 per day. Application deadline is Friday.
