Engineer arrested in campaign probe

Another arrest has been made in the city prosecutor's investigation into Mayor Jeremy Harris' political campaign.

Sam Hyun of Hawai'i Kai was booked Tuesday on suspicion of money laundering, making a false-name campaign donation and illegal ownership of a business.

Hyun, 43, an engineer with W. A. Hirai & Associates, was not charged. He was released pending investigation.

State Campaign Spending Commission records show Hyun gave $3,000 to the Harris campaign in 1999.

Lifeguards at bay resuscitate woman

Lifeguards at Hanauma Bay yesterday resuscitated a Maryland tourist and assisted about 20 other swimmers.

Lifeguards spotted the 40-year-old woman about 1 p.m. floating near the Keyhole area about 20 yards from shore, said Capt. Kevin Allen of city Ocean Safety Division.

"She appeared to be unresponsive," Allen said. "She was swimming with no fins or a snorkel. She might have inhaled water and panicked."

After lifeguards pulled the woman out of the water, they performed CPR and restored her pulse and breathing, Allen said. The woman, who was unconscious but breathing, was taken to Straub Hospital, he said.

Firefighters douse Makaha brushfire

Firefighters late last night battled a brushfire on a hillside in Makaha Valley.

The fire was reported at 10:32 p.m. at the end of Kili Drive. Five fire companies, two tankers and a battalion chief were dispatched.

Fire spokesman Capt. Scott Lawton said the blaze was brought under control at 10:50 p.m. and did not threaten any property. The cause of the fire was not known.

Body in burned house identified

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have identified the badly burned body found Sunday in the remains of a Hilo home as Kim Wissing, 49.

Wissing was identified through dental records, police said.

Police and fire investigators have not determined the cause of Wissing's death or what started the fire that destroyed his Makakai Place residence in the Honoli'i Lookout area. The fire was reported just before 7 a.m. Sunday. Wissing's body was found in the lower level of the structure.

Stabbed woman in critical condition

A 38-year-old woman was in critical condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center after being stabbed Tuesday night during an argument at Ka'a'ahi Street and Ka'amahu Place in Iwilei. Police early yesterday arrested a homeless 37-year-old woman two hours after the 10:15 p.m. incident.

The victim suffered stab wounds in her upper torso, police said.

Triathlete's death not a hit-and-run

KAILUA, Hawai'i — Big Island police have determined that a bicyclist fatally injured during a May 25 triathlon was not the victim of a hit-and-run motorist.

Wayne Scrimshaw, 48, of Kailua was taking part in the Keauhou-Kona Triathlon when he attempted to pass another bicyclist on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway near Kiholo, according to Sgt. Leroy Victorino. The bicycles' handlebars collided, causing both riders to lose their balance and sending Scrimshaw's bicycle crashing to the pavement, he said.

Scrimshaw was flown to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died May 26.

Police initially believed Scrimshaw sideswiped a vehicle after trying to regain his balance from the bicycle collision, but investigators failed to find any evidence the bicycle had been hit by a car, Victorino said.

Autopsy results indicated Scrimshaw's head injuries likely were caused when he hit the pavement, he said.
