HONOLULU

Bone-marrow donors sought

The St. Francis Medical Center Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry will register prospective donors this month as part of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life events.

The drives will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Moanalua High School's athletic field, and from 6 to 10 p.m. July 19 at Magic Island. Donors must be between 18 and 60 years old and in good health. A small blood sample will be collected from potential donors. For more information, call 547-6154.


Heart Walk set for Aug. 9

The American Heart Association will continue the fight against heart disease and stroke at the 10th annual American Heart Walk, Aug. 9 at Kapi'olani Park. This year's theme is "Participate. Raise Funds. Save Lives."

The 4.5-mile walk around Diamond Head will include a health fair, free blood-pressure screenings, stroke risk assessments, cholesterol screenings, a keiki fun fair, food and entertainment.

Judicial Council seeks applicants

The Judicial Council is accepting applications to fill two vacancies on the Campaign Spending Commission. Individuals selected will be appointed to four-year terms and may be reappointed once. Commissioners may not participate in political campaigns or contribute to candidates or political committees.

Classic scenes to be performed

Shakespearean drama students 10 to 14 years old will give free performances of scenes from "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet" at 7 tonight at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre.

The "Hamlet" scenes will be performed like a circus, with jugglers, clowns and tightrope walkers, drama instructor Richard MacPherson said.


NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Visitor center to close for repairs

The visitor center at Haleakala National Park headquarters will close for two weeks starting Monday.

Crews will repair sidewalks and wheelchair ramps and repave the parking lots. The center, at an elevation of 7,000 feet, will reopen July 26.

A second visitor center higher up the mountain will remain open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Hosmer Grove road will be closed for construction from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 21 to Aug. 30. Campers will have access to the campground after 6 p.m. but must depart by 7 a.m.
