Advertiser Staff

Michelle Wie was named National Amateur of the Month by the Southern Golf Association for winning the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Now in its inaugural year, the monthly SGA award by the Birmingham, Ala.-based organization is determined by a selection panel of national golf officials, journalists and college coaches.

Previous winners have been Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, Ricky Barnes of Arizona and Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech.

For the first time, the Waikoloa Open will be played at all three Waikoloa Resort golf courses — the Village, Beach and Kings' — on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

The 30th annual 72-hole tournament will be held Sept. 25-28 with each flight (pro, amateur and senior) playing one round at the three courses. In previous years, all four rounds were played at the Village Course.

The top purse is $25,000 and Regan Lee is the defending champion.

Applications can be obtained by calling (808) 883-9621. The deadline is Sept. 13. Special hotel rates are available at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott.

The Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship will be held Aug. 5-7 at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The event is open to amateur females belonging to the HSWGA or the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association with a handicap index of 9.4 or less.

Entry fee is $150. For more information, call Kathy Ordway at 262-2428.

Toyama, Wise qualify for event

Travis Toyama, a University High senior-to-be, and Kaua'i's Lehua Wise will represent Hawai'i in the 35th National Big I Junior Championships at the Olde York Country Club in Columbus, N.J., Aug. 11-15.

Toyama shot a 3-under 69 and Wise 67 last week at the Hawai'i Prince to lead the state qualifiers.

The national committee extended an exemption to Michelle Wie, who turned it down because of a scheduling conflict.
