Big Isle businessman arrested in campaign case

Wesley Segawa, a Big Island engineering consultant, was arrested today in the city prosecutor's on-going investigation into Mayor Jeremy Harris' political campaign.

Segawa was booked at the Honolulu Police Department's main station at 7:30 a.m. on suspicion of illegal ownership of a business, money laundering, making false-name campaign donations and monopolization. He was later released pending further investigation.

In August 2002, state Campaign Spending Commission executive director Robert Watada confirmed in an Advertiser story that commission investigators found evidence that Segawa and his company, Wesley Segawa & Associates Inc., exceeded legal limits on campaign donations by routing contributions through associates and family members.

Watada said today that the commission investigation of Segawa is complete and that final resolution of the case, which is separate from the prosecutor's criminal probe, is expected next week. Commission investigators identified at least $25,000 in suspect Segawa donations made to the campaigns of former Gov. Ben Cayetano, former Maui Mayor Kimo Apana and Harris.

Segawa is former chairman of the Housing and Community Development Corp. of Hawaii, the state public housing agency.
