Critic's Choice

Mini-reviews of stage productions, by Advertiser theater critic Joseph Rozmiarek

"On Golden Pond": A 50-year relationship is jolted when a couple are asked to take in a teenager for the summer, in a play that became Henry Fonda's last movie. Excellent acting in The Actors' Group production makes this warm comedy as refreshing as a breeze off the lake. Repeats at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Sundays through July 27 at the Yellow Brick Studio, 625 Keawe St. Tickets are $10. 722-6941.

'Aloha Las Vegas'

Brad Goda
Janice Terukina and Tony Solis are among the ensemble cast of "Aloha Las Vegas," the crowd-pleasing comedy/drama that returns to Kumu Kahua Theatre beginning Thursday. "Aloha," by Edward Sakamoto, first hit the stage in 1992, breaking box-office records for Kumu, and was reprised last August.

It's a slice-of-life tale of an island family, land rich but cash poor, and the temptation to move to Las Vegas, where the living is easy and cheap. Retired baker Wally Fukuda (Dann Seki) likes the idea of the Nevada lifestyle, pushed by a boyhood friend, but Wally's grown children have their own ideas.

Kumu's artistic director, Harry Wong III, will direct.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 3 at the 100-seat playhouse, 46 Merchant St. in downtown Honolulu. Tickets are $5-$16; the box office is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call 536-4441.
