The annual Moloka'i Festival returns to the Ward Warehouse 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 19 with hula, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, coffee from Moloka'i Coffee Plantation, locally produced salts, and, of course, the famous fresh-baked breads of Kanemitsu Bakery. (What, no mules? No matter.)

Admission is free.

STAGE: July 18-Aug. 3

Follow the yellow brick road to see "The Wizard of Oz," which closes out the season at Diamond Head Theatre. Kimi Anderson appears as Dorothy while her entourage includes Julie Ogilvie as the Scarecrow, Jimi Wheeler as the Tinman and Agaton Pasion as the Cowardly Lion. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Tracy Yamamoto as Glinda/Aunt Em, F.L. Cabacungan as Guard/Uncle Henry, Kathy Sulieman as the Wicked Witch/Gultch and Dion Donahue as the Wizard/Professor Marvel. Toto will be played by a 3-year-old Chihuahua/terrier/Pomeranian mix named Cherish. Tickets are $10-$40, with discounts for students, seniors and military.

The Hawaii International Jazz Festival, celebrating its 10th year, offers two weekends of music — first in Honolulu, then on Maui — by acclaimed artists from near and far.

In Honolulu, at the Blaisdell Concert Hall:

  • 7-10 p.m. July 18, "Guitar Magic and Vocal Jazz": Guitarist Larry Coryell, vocalist Tierney Sutton and the USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra, and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet with Keahi Conjugacion.
  • 7-10 p.m. July 19, "International Jazz": Flutist Nestor Torres, trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, pianist Makoto Ozone, 'ukulele stylist Jake Shimabukuro and Gypsy Pacific.

On Maui, at the Wailea Marriott Resort's Aulani Ballroom:

  • 7-10 p.m. July 25, "International Jazz": Coryell, Okoshi, the San Diego State University Big Band, Honolulu Jazz Quartet with Conjugacion, and others.
  • 7-10 p.m. July 26, "Hawaiian Jazz": saxophonist Gabe Baltazar, vocalists Jimmy Borges and Conjugacion, Gypsy Pacific, and Ukulele Madness.

Jam sessions will follow the Maui concerts at the Lokelani Ballroom.

STAGE: July 18-Aug. 10

The 2003 Hawaii Shakespeare Festival begins July 18 with the opening of the drama "Macbeth." Additional plays include the adventure story "Henry the Fourth, Part One," opening July 25; and the comedy "Twelfth Night," opening Aug. 1. Each play runs for two weeks. Tickets are $16 general, $14 seniors and military and $8 students. Season tickets for all three plays are $36.

MIXED BAG: July 18-20

Let the treasure hunts begin! The Hawaii All-Collectors Show 2003 will fill the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall with collectibles and antiques from local and Mainland dealers. Enjoy the hands-on display by the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii and learn the traditional techniques of making the Hawaiian 'ukulele. Visit the Quiksilver Edition Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction July 19, with silent auction at 2 p.m. and live auction at 5 p.m. And take advantage of the free seminars on General Antiques and Jade and Gemstones by registering in advance. General admission is $3.75, children ages 7-11 are $2. Seniors 65 and older are free on July 20.

DANCE: July 19

Moanalua Gardens Foundation celebrates the 26th annual Prince Lot Hula Festival with 13 halau performing, including the winners of the Hawai'i Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition. Delight in the many demonstrations scheduled, including hands-on Hawaiian games, lauhala weaving and ipu making. Bring your beach mats and sand chairs to enjoy the entertainment, which includes the Royal Hawaiian Band, under the monkeypod trees. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed. Free.

CONCERT: July 20

It's time for some smooth, slow grooves with the '70s Soul Jam. Featuring hit bands from the decade of big hair and equally big shoes, The Stylistics, The Manhattans and The Chi-Lites get it on with their silky sounds to help you dance the night away on two dance floors. Jimmie "JJ" Walker serves as the "Dyno-Mite" host. Tickets: $35 and $45.

STAGE: July 25-Aug. 3

'Ohi'a Productions brings back an original musical by Lisa Matsumoto and Roslyn, "On Dragonfly Wings," inspired by Alana Dung, who died of leukemia when she was 3 years old. Energetic songs and colorful characters follow Wendy the waterbug as she turns into a gorgeous dragonfly. This heartwarming story, which celebrates life and portrays death as a beginning rather than an end, has been rewritten with new characters and songs. Tickets: $15-$40.

CONCERT: July 25-26

It's one of the biggest birthday parties of the year. The two-night KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash showcases local music entertainers, the return of the Island Music MVPs and an all-star revue. The July 25 lineup includes Sean Na'auao, Three Plus, Na Palapalai, Pati, O-Shen, 'Ekolu, Sudden Rush and The Next Generation. July 26 features Kapena, Fiji, Keahiwai, Natural Vibrations, Ten Feet and B.E.T. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. July 25 and 4 p.m. July 26, with a "Live at Five" segment at 5 p.m. on July 26. The first 5,000 through the gate each night receive a free FM100 Birthday Bash cap. Tickets for each show are $18.50 lawn, $19.50 terrace and $26 pool. Two-night admission tickets are $30 lawn and $32 upper terrace.

FESTIVAL: July 27

Professional and amateur 'ukulele players from around the world come together to strum their stuff during the 33rd annual 'Ukulele Festival. Entertainers this year include Raiatea Helm, Frank DeLima, Ernie Cruz Jr., Troy Fernandez, Herb Ohta Jr. and Herb "Ohta-San" Ohta. Roy Sakuma's 800 piece 'ukulele band, featuring more than 800 children, also performs. Danny Kaleikini serves as emcee. Free.

CONCERT: Aug. 14

Known for the hit songs "Understatement" and "Head on Collision," emo rock band New Found Glory brings its sounds to the islands for an all-ages concert. Its song "Forget About Everything" can be heard on the "American Wedding" soundtrack, the third installment of the naughty but funny "American Pie" movies ("Wedding" is scheduled to open in theaters Aug. 1). Tickets: $20.

Show canceled: That Frank Sinatra tribute show, featuring Randy Smith and earlier announced for tonight at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room, has been canceled because musical conductor Frank Diehl was stricken by a heart attack. For refunds, check with the hotel's dining desk, 931-8383.

Couplings: Kaumakaiwa "Lopaka" Kanaka'ole, son of performer Kekuhi Kanahele and great grandson of the legendary Auntie Edith Kanaka'ole, will join Mihana, daughter of Irmgard Aluli, in an evening of Hawaiian song, 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 18 at Don Ho's Island Grill. Kanaka'ole, who has a new CD out called "Ha'i Kupuna," performs from 7:30 p.m. ... And Sky Perkins ("One Small Favor") will guest-perform with Zanuck Lindsey in selected shows at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Mai Tai Bar shows, including stints July 23, 25 and 30 (4:30-7:30 p.m.).

Bridge to Hawai'i: Hiroshima, the Los Angeles-based Asian fusion band (East meets West), has a hot new CD out, "The Bridge," which reflects the group's multicultural and spiritual connections. The good news is that as part of a promotional tour, Hawai'i is on the roster, for a December playdate.
