Shibuya leads OCC Men's Invitational

Advertiser Staff

Randy Shibuya shot a 3-under-par 68, including six birdies on the back nine, to take a two-stroke lead yesterday after the first round of the 40th Annual O'ahu Country Club Men's Invitational at the O'ahu Country Club.

Johnny McCray was the only other golfer under par for the day, carding a 1-under 70. Defending champion Ryan Koshi shot a 76.

The field of 90 will be cut to 35 plus ties after today's second round, which starts at 7 a.m. Play concludes tomorrow with an 11 a.m. start.

MORE GOLF

Mililani GC special: Local residents with valid identification can play 18 holes of golf for $30 at the Mililani Golf Club, as part of its "Kama'aina Mondays" promotion.

From now until the end of the year, kama'aina will be allowed unrestricted play on Mondays, excluding holidays.

For more information, contact general manager Brian Tamamoto at 623-2222.

RUNNING

Jamba Juice 5K: The 3rd Annual Jamba Juice 5K Banana Man Chase will be Saturday, July 19, at Ala Moana Park, beginning at 7 a.m.

Competitors chase runners dressed in Jamba Banana Man costumes, and the top finishers in each category will receive Jamba Juice smoothies for a year.

Entry forms are available at all Jamba Juice locations.

YACHTING

Pegasus extends lead: Despite seas that were suddenly "out of wind," Phillippe Kahn's Pegasus traveled 249 miles in a 24-hour span to extend its lead over Pyewacket to 43 miles in Division I of the 42nd Transpac Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

Only eight of the 54 yachts traveled 200 miles yesterday, considered a bad day by normal standards.

Four boats are now projected to reach the Diamond Head finish line as late as July 18, the day of the awards dinner. No boats are projected to finish the 2,225-nautical mile course before Monday.
