Awaiting their ancestors

Offerings await the return of the deceased at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii. Buddhists believe that during obon season the deceased come back to be among the living.

Alice Takahashi, of Manoa, says a prayer after placing flowers at her family's otoba, or memorial tablet. Thursday marked the beginning of obon season for the temple, which, in addition to daily services, will culminate in a Toro Nagashi, or lantern parade, tomorrow at 8 p.m.
