Matsumoto wins OCC golf event

Mervin Matsumoto shot a final-round 1-over 72 yesterday to win the Oahu Country Club's Men's Invitational.

Matsumoto finished with a three-round total of 1-under 212.

Christian Akau, who shared the second-round lead with Randy Shibuya, finished second with 76—215. Shibuya finished in a tie for 13th after an 85—224.



YOUTH BASEBALL

Clinic in Kailua, Kona: A free clinic for high school and youth baseball coaches with instruction from Pacific 10 Conference coaches will be held July 26 as part of the Second Annual Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Camp in Kailua, Kona.

The clinic will be held at the Hapuna Prince Hotel's Hau Lehua Room at 10 a.m.

Among those expected to make presentations are Pac 10 head coaches Gary Adams (UCLA), Mark Marquess (Stanford) and Dave Esquer (California), along with Mark O'Brien (Santa Clara) and Lindsay Meggs (Cal St.-Chico).

Former major league All-Star Tim Leary will lead a group of pitching coaches that includes Stanford's Tom Kunis, Santa Clara's Tom Myers and University of Hawai'i's Chad Konishi. UCLA's Jason Green and California's Matt Allison will also participate.

Registration is still available for the youth clinic scheduled for July 27-29 at the Kailua-Kona Regulation Baseball Field. Boys and girls, ages 7-17, are eligible for this free clinic by registering at the following County Parks and Recreation sites: Kailua-Kona gym complex, Parker Gym in Waimea, Waikoloa Elementary School, and Hilo's Parks and Recreation Division office at Aunty Sally's Luau House.

The foundations of Jack Gifford and Betty Kanuha, along with County of Hawai'i Parks and Recreation Dept, are sponsoring both the youth camp and coaching clinic.
