Boy not charged in Kanunu break-in

Advertiser Staff

A 17-year-old boy accused of shooting a Punchbowl man during a June 26 burglary has not been charged in connection with a Kanunu Street break-in on June 23.

A story on Page B1 Friday incorrectly reported he would be charged that day.

Miti "Junior" Maugaotega Jr. faces an Aug. 27 hearing on whether he will be charged as an adult or a juvenile with attempted murder, burglary, firearms and drug-related offenses stemming from the Punchbowl case.

On Friday, police arrested Maugaotega as a juvenile on suspicion of armed robbery and sexual assault, related to separate incidents on June 16 and June 23.

Maugaotega has been transferred from the Alder Street detention facility and is being held at the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility.

Police said they are investigating three other burglary cases in which he may be a suspect.
