Donors arrested in Harris probe

Hai Shi, president of Global Tours & Travel Hawaii, and his wife were arrested yesterday on suspicion of money laundering, making false-name contributions and exceeding the limits of per-person donations allowed for non-U.S. citizens in connection with the city prosecutor's investigation into Mayor Jeremy Harris' political campaign.

Shi and his wife, Jackie Wong-Shi, were booked and released pending further investigation.

Two others, Dean and Deanna Grathwhorl, were arrested and released pending further investigation today on suspicion of making false-name contributions.

On Saturday, Kenneth T. Sakai, a 59-year-old vice president for R.M. Towill Corp., was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, making a campaign donation using a false name and illegal ownership of a business.

Sakai is the third R.M. Towill executive to be arrested in the past three weeks.

Man charged in robbery, assaults

An 18-year-old man was charged Saturday with stealing a skateboard from one man, 18, and using it to strike two other teenagers, ages 18 and 17, in the face and head Friday night in Waikiki.

Mikael Mikami, who has no permanent local address, is charged with first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree assault. His bail totals $250,000.

Police said Mikami was with several people when he confronted the skateboard's owner in back of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at 2259 Kalakaua Ave. at 10:15 p.m.

Mikami asked and was granted permission to hold the large skateboard but allegedly refused to return it. He allegedly robbed the man of money, music compact discs and the skateboard after threatening to hit him with the skateboard, police said.

In a second confrontation that occurred in front of 2290 Kalakaua Ave. at 10:45 p.m., Mikami allegedly assaulted two males with the skateboard. The victims were treated for injuries at The Queen's Medical Center and released.

Arson suspected in house, vehicle fires

Fires today that caused $21,000 damage to an abandoned Nanakuli home and $30,000 damage to three parked vehicles in Mililani were intentionally set, said Honolulu Fire Department investigator Capt. Glenn Solem.

Firefighters had the Nanakuli fire at 87-117 Kahau St. under control at 1:56 a.m., 29 minutes after responding to the scene. Solem said the house had no electrical power. Damage was concentrated to the main structure. An extension to the same house was damaged about a year ago by a fire that was also deliberately set, Solem said.

In Mililani, an ignitable liquid was used to start a fire in the bed of a pickup truck, said Solem. The 3:21 a.m. fire at 95-250 Waioleka St. caused exposure damage to a second pickup truck, a van and the home's garage.
