• MANUEL C. MENENDEZ III, whose mission as head of the city's Office of Economic Development is to bolster business in Honolulu, will outline various "Economic Development Initiatives" in a speech July 24 at The Pacific Club to the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. • Fred Noa, a retail expert and vice president of the Retail Properties team with CB Richard Ellis Hawaii Inc., will be among those speaking at the Hawai'i Developers' Council mid-year real estate review. Noa, who will discuss "Changing of the Guard," will be one of several panelists' giving overviews of how various segments of the real estate and development industry are performing this year. Other panelists, focusing on other segments of the industry, including residential, office, resort and visitor industry, include Harvey Shapiro, of the Honolulu Board of Realtors; Steve Metter, of MW Group; Joseph Toy of Hospitality Advisors LLC; and C. • Current law and practice for early-stage and emerging growth companies, nontraditional venture capital financing, and Hawai'i Act 221 investment tax credit venture capital financing will be among topics discussed at the monthly THINKTECH LAW SERIES, sponsored by ThinkTech Hawai'i and the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Outreach College/Pacific New Media. Speaking will be Jeffrey K.D. au, managing director and general counsel of PacificGap Group LLC, a Hawai'i-based venture-capital firm with offices in Honolulu and Silicon Valley, Calif. • The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small-business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. • How new U.S. and European large-scale retailers continue to post record profits in Japan despite a troubled economy will be discussed by one of that country's leading retail developers as the closing keynote address to the upcoming International Council of Shopping Centers conference. Speaking from 10:45 a.m. to noon Friday at the Wailea Marriott, an Outrigger Resort, on Maui will be Kanji Matsushita, of Takenaka Corp. He will outline the sweeping changes to retail real estate in Japan in the past five years, including the entry of U.S. and European large-scale retailers; prospects for other non-Japanese retailers and developers, and how Japanese retailers are coping with the influx of the new brands.
