SHARON SHIROMA BROWN, a senior vice president at First Hawaiian Bank, has been named president of the First Hawaiian Foundation, the bank's charitable arm. She succeeds Lily K. Yao who retired June 30 from the position and as vice chairwoman of First Hawaiian Bank. Brown will retain her former responsibilities as head of the bank's Sales, Service and Training Division, as well as assume Yao's community relations responsibilities. Brown is also on the board of directors of the Hawaiian Humane Society and Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, and has held volunteer leadership roles with the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, Aloha United Way, Hale Kipa and Hawaii's Junior Miss. The bank and its charitable foundation last year contributed almost $2.2 million to more than 300 nonprofit organizations.

JOHN S. NITAO has joined The Queen's Health Systems as general counsel. Nitao was formerly a partner with the Honolulu law firm of Chun, Kerr, Dodd, Beaman & Wong, with a practice concentrated in business and real estate, and taxation. He is past Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset president and Alzheimer's Association vice president.

MAILE ALAU, former executive director of the USS Arizona Memorial Fund, has been named director of development and major gifts for Chaminade University. The 13-year fund-raising veteran also has worked for The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i.

Also named to Chaminade's Department of Institutional Advancement is SARA PLATTE, new director of communications and marketing. The 20-year communications veteran is an accredited public relations counselor and former board member of the Public Relations Society of America, Orange County. She is a former press secretary for the Orange County and San Diego County, Calif., supervisors, and operator of her own public relations agency. She serves as volunteer communications director for the New Hope Christian Fellowship O'ahu.

• The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce has installed its 2004 officers and board of directors: chairman of the board, ARNOLD S. HIROTSU; chairman-elect, GREGG E. MUELLER; first vice chairman, WAYNE H. KIRIHARA; second vice-chairman, GLENN S. YAMADA; secretary, GLENN S. NAKAMURA; treasurer, RAYMOND S. ONO; and auditors, MILTON T. HIURA, BRIAN H. SUZUKI and WAYNE T. TOMA.

MELVIN Y. KANESHIGE, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Outrigger Enterprises Inc. was named the 91st president of The Rotary Club of Honolulu. The organization, chartered in 1915, was the first Rotary Club in Hawai'i. The club has focused recent com-munity service efforts on programs supporting youth and public education. Before joining Outrigger in 1995, Kaneshige was a partner in the law firm of Chun, Kerr, Dodd & Kaneshige.
