THE LEFT LANE
Aloha Friday spreads

Advertiser Staff

When Marian Okada turned on the TV to watch the news during a Tokyo visit, she was surprised to see that the nearby city of Chigasaki had adopted an "Aloha Shirt Friday" campaign. City employees have been wearing aloha shirts every Friday to beat the heat and look cool.

Now they're visiting other business folks to encourage them to do the same.

Add this to the three-year waiting lists for 'ukulele lessons, and countless hula troupes dancing in mu'umu'u and lei, and it's clear that the Japanese are still crazy about things Hawaiian.

Drop your film here

What filmmakers couldn't use $5,000 and a nifty venue for their work, we ask you.

The Cinema Paradise Film Festival is accepting entries from local filmmakers through tomorrow. Any film or video project completed in Hawai'i after January 2001 is eligible.

A jury of industry professionals will review projects to be considered for the $5,000 Hawaii Filmmaker Award presented by the Movie Museum.

The festival takes place Sept. 19-25 at the Art House at Restaurant Row. For more information, see www.cinemaparadise.org.
