Schofield soldiers train in Australia
More than 110 soldiers from Company B, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment at Schofield Barracks recently deployed to Australia to train with the Australian Army during exercise Pacific Bond 2003.
The exercise will include cross-training in Enoggera, jungle training in Canungra and "adventure" training in Brisbane.
"It gives us the opportunity to train with our allies," said 1st Lt. David Briten, 3rd platoon leader. "We can see what kind of techniques they use and exchange tactics, but also build on those military relationships that are very vital to any allegiance between two countries."
The soldiers are scheduled to return to Hawai'i no later than Aug. 10.
NAVY
Pearl Harbor sub tests new missile
The Navy's new Tactical Tomahawk cruise missile was launched for the first time from a submarine last week using the Pearl Harbor-based USS Tucson off the coast of southern California.
The test demonstrated the newly developed Block IV Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System and the Tomahawk Command and Control System.
The missile broke the ocean's surface and successfully demonstrated shroud separation, rocket motor firing and separation, and deployment of fins and wings as it transitioned to cruise flight for an 814-nautical mile flight to a target, the Navy said.
The Tactical Tomahawk is an improved version of the Tomahawk first used in Operation Desert Storm. The new missile is expected to be operational in 2004.
